This is important for two reasons. First, local real estate taxes account for about 70% of our operating budget. These taxes are critical to maintain a high level of education for our students. At the same time, no one wants to pay more taxes. So, creating a cost effective educational system is a priority for us.
The approach we’ve taken to control staffing expenses through attrition is also important because it’s a gradual change that will avoid disruptions in how we deliver instruction through all grade levels.
We are ending our first term with millage rates within 7% of 2015 rates - much less than 1% increase per year. That’s impressive considering typical cost increases factored into our personnel, services and supply contracts. In addition, the pandemic has added additional inflationary pressures to managing our school budget.
We’ve maintained solid financial discipline by focusing on right-sizing staffing levels to account for declining enrollment over the last 25 years. We’ve also enhanced funding of our budget through additional grant sources.
Overall Result: Bethel Park's millage rate is lower than most of our neighboring school districts while at the same time, our academic performance aligns us with high performing leaders.
We will continue to optimize the expenses and performance of this district to ensure that all stakeholders are receiving the best value possible.
